Frequently asked questions

Answers about ordering, shipping, custom machining and metric parts from Maedler North America.

Ordering and pricing

Who can order from Maedler North America?

Any business or individual in North America can order online at maedlernorthamerica.com: engineers, machine builders, maintenance teams, distributors, schools and hobbyists. We also ship to the other countries listed at checkout. Not sure whether we deliver to you? Send us a request with your address. Prices are shown on every product page. A free customer account saves your addresses and order history so you can reorder faster.

Are prices in U.S. dollars, and are there quantity discounts?

Yes. All prices are in U.S. dollars, and most product pages show quantity prices that drop as you order more, for example from 1–4 pieces up to 500 pieces and more. For larger quantities, or a project with many different parts, request a quote and we will price the whole list.

How do I get a quote?

Email your part numbers and quantities to sales@maedlernorthamerica.com, call 941.803.0160, or use the contact form at the bottom of every page on our website. For custom parts, attach a drawing or describe the part and the quantity. We usually reply within one business day.

Tip: add the parts to your cart and click Share cart to receive the cart as a PDF. Many purchasing departments accept it for internal approval.

I have a MÄDLER part number. How do I find the part?

Type the 8-digit MÄDLER product number (for example 22372000) into the search box at the top of this site. MÄDLER uses the same number in its printed catalogue, on maedler.de and on our product pages, so a number from a drawing, an old invoice or a machine parts list leads straight to the part. If the part is not in our online shop, email the number to sales@maedlernorthamerica.com. We can supply the full MÄDLER product range, as well as other items we can source for you.

Can you find a MÄDLER part to replace another brand's part?

Often, yes. Send us the other manufacturer's part number, a drawing, a photo with measurements, or the key data (bore, number of teeth, module or pitch, width, material). We will suggest the closest MÄDLER standard part, or quote a custom part if no standard part fits.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards. Business customers with an order history and continuing orders can apply for Net 30 terms; email sales@maedlernorthamerica.com to apply. Wire transfer and ACH are also available.

How do I order tax-exempt or for resale?

Create a free account on our website and send your resale or sales-tax exemption certificate to sales@maedlernorthamerica.com. We will then approve your account for tax-exempt ordering.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No, there is no minimum order. You can order a single standard part online. For custom-made and reworked parts, the price per piece drops as the quantity goes up, so ask for a quote with a few quantity levels if you are not sure how many you need.

Stock, lead times and shipping

How fast will my order ship?

Every product page shows the part's stock status. Parts shown as in stock ship from our warehouse in Bradenton, Florida, the same business day for orders placed before 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Parts shown as backorder get transferred to our warehouse and usually ship within 1–2 weeks. Custom and reworked parts get their own lead time on the quote.

What does “backorders ship within 1–2 weeks” mean?

The part is not on our shelf in Florida right now, but you can still order it at the listed price. We transfer the part to our warehouse and ship it to you, usually within 1–2 weeks.

Do you ship orders complete or in parts?

We normally ship your order complete, so everything arrives in one delivery. If you need the in-stock items sooner, add a note at checkout or call us and we can split the shipment. Extra charges for a separate shipment apply.

Which carriers do you use, and what does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on weight and destination. We ship with UPS and FedEx, and heavy orders ship by LTL freight. You can also ship on your own UPS or FedEx account for a $10 handling fee.

Do you ship to Canada and Mexico?

Yes. We ship to customers across North America, including Canada and Mexico. Duties, import taxes and brokerage fees are paid by the customer.

Can I return a part?

Yes, unused standard parts in new condition can be returned within 30 days of purchase. Email returns@maedlernorthamerica.com for a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before you send the part. A 15% restocking fee applies, and the buyer pays return shipping. Custom-made parts and belts or chains that were cut to size cannot be returned. If a part arrives damaged or defective, contact us and we will arrange a replacement or refund. Full details are in our Return Policy.

Custom parts and machining

Can you re-bore a gear or sprocket, or add a keyway?

Yes. Most MÄDLER gears, sprockets, timing belt pulleys and couplings are stocked with a small pilot bore so they can be machined to fit your shaft. We can bore to your size and tolerance, cut a keyway to DIN 6885, and add threaded holes for set screws. We also offer expedited rework services for many parts.

Do you stock parts with finished bores and keyways?

Yes. For common shaft diameters, many sprockets, V-belt pulleys, spur gears and worm gear sets are stocked ready to install: with a finished bore and keyway, or prepared for a Taper bush. Use the Bore filter on the product category pages to find them.

Can you make custom gears or parts from my drawing?

Yes. MÄDLER makes custom parts in its own factories: spur gears, gear racks, bevel gears, worm gears and worms, trapezoidal lead screws and nuts, splined shafts and hubs, and clamp collars. Production runs from a single piece to large series, as well as ready-to-install assemblies. Send a drawing (PDF, STEP or DXF), a sample, or a description with the quantity to sales@maedlernorthamerica.com, and we will quote price and lead time.

What machining and gear-cutting processes does MÄDLER offer?

MÄDLER's own production includes:

  • CNC and conventional turning and milling, machining centers and CNC drilling
  • Gear milling, bevel gear milling, gear rack milling and gear shaping
  • Gear grinding up to quality 6, plus cylindrical and surface grinding
  • Thread whirling, and rolling of trapezoidal threads up to 70 t pressure
  • Broaching of keyways and spline profiles
  • Straightening of long parts, sandblasting, surface treatment and assembly
  • Measuring and testing for quality control

Can you cut roller chain to length or add attachments?

Yes. Roller chains can be cut to any length, riveted into endless chains, or fitted with attachments at the spacing you need, from a single chain to large series. You can design an attachment chain and see its price with the chain configurator on our MÄDLER tools page.

Can you keep parts in stock for our scheduled orders?

Yes. For parts you buy regularly, we can set up a blanket order and keep your parts ready for scheduled releases, so each release ships quickly. Contact sales to set this up.

Technical help: metric parts for U.S. engineers

What does “module” mean on a gear?

Module (m) is the metric measure of gear tooth size. It equals the pitch diameter in millimeters divided by the number of teeth: a module 1 gear with 20 teeth has a 20 mm pitch diameter. A larger module means larger, stronger teeth. Two gears mesh only if they have the same module and the same pressure angle. MÄDLER spur gears are involute gears with a 20° pressure angle.

How do I convert module to diametral pitch?

Diametral pitch (DP) = 25.4 ÷ module, and module = 25.4 ÷ DP.

ModuleDiametral pitchCircular pitch
0.550.81.57 mm
125.43.14 mm
1.516.934.71 mm
212.76.28 mm
2.510.167.85 mm
38.479.42 mm
46.3512.57 mm
55.0815.71 mm

The results are not whole numbers, so a metric gear does not match a standard inch gear exactly.

Can metric gears run with inch (diametral pitch) gears?

No, not reliably. Even the closest pairs, such as module 1 (25.4 DP) and 24 DP, have different tooth spacing, so the gears wear fast and run noisily. Older U.S. gears may also have a 14.5° pressure angle instead of 20°. Replace both gears of a pair with the same system.

What does an “H7” bore mean?

H7 is an ISO tolerance for holes: the bore is never smaller than its nominal size and only slightly larger. For example, a 10 mm H7 bore measures between 10.000 and 10.015 mm (0.3937–0.3943 in). On a shaft with h6 tolerance it gives a close sliding fit; on a k6 shaft, a light press (transition) fit. Die-cast plastic sprockets are usually made to H8, a slightly wider tolerance.

Are metric keyways the same as inch keyways?

No. MÄDLER parts use metric keys to DIN 6885, for example a 5 × 5 mm key for shafts over 12 mm up to 17 mm. U.S. inch keys follow ANSI B17.1 and have different widths, so a metric key will not fit an inch keyway properly. If your shaft is in inches, send us a request: whether we can cut an inch keyway depends on the part.

What are the U.S. equivalents of the steel grades in your catalogue?

European gradeMaterial no.Closest U.S. grade
C451.0503AISI 1045
16MnCr51.7131AISI 5115
X5CrNi18-101.4301AISI 304
X8CrNiS18-91.4305AISI 303
X5CrNiMo17-12-21.4401AISI 316

These grades are close, not identical. For critical applications, check the material data on the product page or ask us.

Should I choose a plastic, brass or steel gear?

Plastic gears (POM, polyacetal) run quietly, need no lubrication and suit light loads, such as office equipment and small automation. Brass and stainless steel resist corrosion. Steel gears carry the highest loads, and hardened, ground gears give the most precision and wear resistance. The catalogue tables list the permissible torque of each gear, calculated to DIN 3990.

Pin, key, locking assembly or Taper bush: which shaft connection should I use?

A pin through hub and shaft suits low torque. A feather key (DIN 6885) suits medium torque and is the most common connection. Locking assemblies, clamping bushes and shrink disks clamp a plain shaft with no keyway and carry high torque. Taper bushes fit quickly, come in many bore sizes and carry fairly high torque. MÄDLER stocks sprockets, pulleys and couplings in Taper versions.

Which timing belt profile should I use: T, AT, HTD or inch?

T (T2.5, T5, T10, T20) is the classic metric trapezoidal tooth. AT (AT3, AT5, AT10, AT20) has stronger teeth for more power and less backlash, a good choice for linear positioning. HTD (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M) has rounded teeth for high torque. MXL, XL, L and H are the inch profiles found on many U.S. machines. Belt and pulleys must always have the same profile. Our timing belt calculator helps you size the drive.

What is the difference between European (DIN 8187) and ANSI roller chain?

Both are covered by ISO 606. European B-series chain (for example 08B-1, 1/2 in pitch) was formerly DIN 8187; American A-series or ANSI chain (for example ANSI 40, also 1/2 in pitch) was formerly DIN 8188. Roller diameter, inner width and plate sizes differ, so chains and sprockets from the two series should not be mixed. MÄDLER supplies both, including ANSI 25 to 80 sprockets and standard, self-lubricating and stainless ANSI chains. Availability depends on size and version, so send us a request with the chain or sprocket you need.

Do you have inch-size parts?

Most of the MÄDLER range is metric, but it also includes ANSI roller chains and sprockets and inch timing belts and pulleys (MXL, XL, L and H). For a metric part on an inch shaft, boring and keying the hub to your inch size depends on the part. Send us a request with your shaft size and we will find the right solution.
